College Sports Reporter, The New York Times
Pete Thamel is in his ninth year as the college sports reporter for The New York Times. He covers the national college football and basketball beats, and has reported stories everywhere from Maui to Istanbul to Beijing.In 2006, the Times nominated Thamel for a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting for his work uncovering diploma mills that were giving fast and easy grades to talented high school prospects. He has won numerous Associated Press Sports Editor Awards and been noted in the Best American Sportswriting Series. Northeastern University’s center for the Study of Sport in Society honored Thamel with an Excellence in Journalism Award for his work exposing the ills of high school and college sports.
Thamel is a graduate of the Newhouse School, where he majored in magazine. As a student at Syracuse University, he served as sports editor of The Daily Orange for three years—and still considers it the best job he’s ever had. He also worked covering college basketball for The Post-Standard and for ESPN.
